Roundtable Highlights Veteran Political Organizers
On Monday, four veteran organizers in New Orleans – Nia Weeks, Director of Policy and Advocacy for Women With A Vision; Ashley Shelton, Executive Director of Power Coalition; Lynda Woolard, Board President of Independent Women’s Organization; and Julie Schwam Harris, President of the Legislative Agenda for Women – discussed their unique journeys into political organizing, examined their methods for building people power, and shared strategies for long-term self-care.
The panel is a part of the ongoing event series associated with our Fall Exhibit, Sites of Resistance: An Exhibit Exploring the Histories + Geographies of Social Change in New Orleans.
Sites of Resistance works to reframe a dominant narrative that has obscured New Orleans’ historical role as a site of intense organizing, legal strategy, labor struggle, and civil rights activism. By elevating lineages and spaces of dissent and marginalized stories of inter-racial collaboration, as well as histories of direct conflict and challenge in contested spaces, we hope to reconnect our audience with the possibilities for making change that have been erased from our civic framework.
