Youth Design Partnerships

Starting in 2015, Small Center has hosted events, collaborated on design projects, and displayed the work of students and youth from around the city.

Project Dates

January 2015–Present

Context

In the current landscape of an almost entirely chartered school system, New Orleans youth have few opportunities and to learn about and gain skills in design.

Small Center Engagement

Starting in 2015, Small Center has hosted events, collaborated on design projects, and displayed the work of students and youth from around the city. From design charrettes for a literary sno-ball stand, to an exhibition and student-led panel discussion on mapping as a tool for understanding one’s self in the city, Small Center is excited to contribute to youth driven programming and design education. By nurturing design engagement with youth in a supportive environment, Small Center helps increase youths’ design literacy. Small Center works to engage youth from underrepresented communities as experts in the needs and dynamics of their city.

Outcome

Through building partnerships with local youth programming organizations, we’re able to give opportunities for New Orleans youth to increase their design skills. Additionally, Tulane School of Architecture students gain insight from youth who sit in on critiques.
