Red Beans Roundtable

Join us Monday, March 18th to discuss “How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality, and the Fight for the Neighborhood” with author Peter Moskowitz.

Peter Moskowitz is a writer and journalist based in New Orleans. They’ve written for the New York Times, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, The Nation along with many other national outlets. Peter grew up in New York City’s West Village, back before it was gentrified. When Peter returned to New York City after college, they realized their neighborhood and many others had been completely changed, taken over by real estate development. The sense of community was gone. This is what inspired Peter to write How to Kill a City, which was published in 2016. Since the publication of the book, Peter has traveled around the country and talked to activist groups and residents experiencing displacement, high rents, and all of the other negative effects of gentrification. Peter works with activists to challenge policies that encourage gentrification. They also continue to write, their next book will be about free speech and its intersections with race and inequality. It will be published in August of 2019.

Red Beans Roundtables are casual conversations. Small Center provides red beans and rice from Café Reconcile and great panels of speakers who have unique insights into the big issues facing New Orleans. We ask our panelists and all participants to bring their questions, expertise, and appetites to Small Center so we can all learn and teach together.
