The Cost of Home
Department of Housing and Urban Development
How does the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development affect affordable housing in New Orleans?
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was created just over 50 years ago in 1965. Today, HUD is a $47 billion agency in which approximately 85 percent of its total budget is needed solely to renew rental assistance to 5.5 million low-income residents and to renew existing HUD grants to homeless assistance programs. HUD is also a vehicle for advancing sustainable and inclusive growth patterns, communities of choice, energy efficiency, and community and economic development, and for enforcing fair housing, strengthening the nation’s mortgage market, as well as reducing homelessness.
Come learn about the structure and role of HUD nationally and the agency’s specific impact in New Orleans. Join us and Casius Pealer, Director of Tulane University’s graduate program in Sustainable Real Estate Development, to discuss our federal government’s ongoing support for housing and urban development—including some thoughts on what might be coming next.
