Broad Street Corridor Study

Small Center conducted a planning study in partnership with Broad Community Connections (BCC) to identify development opportunities, design infrastructure improvements, and bolster cultural representation through art and branding.

Project Dates

August 2023–March 2024

Context

Students in Small Center’s Engaged Urban Design seminar worked with Broad Community Connections and local business owners to envision improvements along the Broad Street Corridor between Tulane and St. Bernard avenues. Analysis included existing businesses and cultural institutions, along with extensive on-site surveying.

Small Center Engagement

Students and staff engaged with business owners and a panel of city leaders, planners, and other professionals to help shape their design ideas into practical and visually approachable proposals. The resulting study includes bike, pedestrian, lighting, transit, and landscape improvements alongside identification and strategy for community-led real estate development opportunities. Suggested architectural and visual improvements aim to increase business visibility and patronage and provide access for all modes of transit.

Partner Organization

Sustaining a grassroots-led approach to development, Broad Community Connections (BCC) uses deep relationship building and community participation to create intentional reinvestment along Broad Street. BCC’s work includes coordinating the Refresh Collaborative, a collective impact organization comprised of over 60 organizations and community members working together to address the root causes of health inequity in the Broad Street neighborhoods, along with many other initiatives and programming in support of neighborhoods and businesses along the corridor.

Outcome

Broad Community Connections leadership and staff digitally collected data from student surveying to add to prior and forthcoming efforts along the corridor. Student designs will also be used in ongoing conversations with city leaders and potential funders for projects along Broad Street.

The study was completed in Spring 2024, and can be seen here.
