Hollygrove Greenline Officially Opens

After five years of hard work, the Hollygrove Greenline is officially open! Located in a low-lying district of New Orleans between Carrollton Avenue and the Jefferson Parish line, Hollygrove was crossed by major urban infrastructure long before residential development occurred there. The Greenline is a former rail bed now used to convey stormwater to nearby outfall canals.

After five years of hard work, we’re so excited to officially open the Hollygrove Greenline! Throughout this process, several phases of development have been achieved, including site access, walking paths, rain gardens, shade trees, seating, and a shade pavilion with unique water collection devices used to demonstrate four ways of reducing stormwater runoff and local flooding by managing water on-site.

This project was a collaboration between Tulane School of Architecture students, Carollton-Hollygrove Community Development Corporation, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), DesignCorps, Hollygrove Market & Farm, The New Orleans Food & Farm Network, Trinity Christian Communities, Engineers Without Borders, Twin Shores Landscape, Dana Brown & Associates, and Appropriate Technologies. The project manager was Nick Jenisch, and the lead designer was Judith Kinnard, FAIA. Project support provided by Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans, Carrollton-Hollygrove CDC, Emerging Philanthropists of New Orleans, Surdna Foundation, and Enterprise Foundation.
