Holy Ghost House
Partnering with Neighborhood Housing Services, Tulane Architecture students designed the Holy Ghost House, which is a three bedroom, two bath, single family home occupying 1400 square feet on a single level.
Project Dates
August 2005–August 2005
Context
Located within New Orleans’ Central City, the Holy Ghost neighborhood is bound by Claiborne Avenue, General Taylor Street, St. Charles Avenue, and Washington Avenue. The area is named for the Holy Ghost Catholic Church which was originally established to serve the large African-American population of Central City. The neighborhood’s major corridors are primarily commercial, while the neighborhood’s interior is mainly made up of shotguns and corner stores, with a lack of affordable housing.
Small Center Engagement
The Holy Ghost House is a design for a three bedroom, two bath, single family home occupying 1400 square feet on a single level, with both private and more communal spaces. The metal roof wraps down the south side of the house, anchoring one edge of the project while allowing the others to remain open and permeable to the street life that lends this neighborhood its vibrancy. This permeability allows for passive air flow, while the active systems also contribute to the house’s increased energy efficiency.
Partner Organization
Neighborhood Housing Services of New Orleans, Inc. was founded in 1976 as a private, non-profit housing corporation with the belief that a partnership between local residents, financial institutions, businesses, and local government can stop decline, promote reinvestment, and restore pride and confidence in urban neighborhoods.
Outcome
The summer 2005 studio was preparing to break ground on the Holy Ghost House site on August 29, 2005, which is the day that Katrina made landfall. The Holy Ghost House prototype was never constructed. Though the house was never constructed, the studio’s approach serves as a framework that continues to guide our work.
